What do a tailor who liked to experiment, an imaginative sparrow, and the tallest church spire in the world have in common?

All three come from the same city: from Ulm, the gateway to Upper Swabia at the point where the rivers Blau and Iller join the Danube at the foot of the Swabian Jura. And this is only a small part of what there is to discover.

In Ulm and all around Ulm

Ulm has over 120,000 inhabitants and Ulm and Neu-Ulm together have more than 170,000 inhabitants. The Danube separates Ulm from Neu-Ulm as well as the Federal States Baden-Württemberg from Bavaria. The former Royal Palace has become a beautiful and vibrant city with excellent infrastructure and a high recreational value.

Through its famous industrial products and significant research results of its University, Ulm has built a worldwide reputation for innovation. The varied educational opportunities in the city attract thousands of students from around the world every year.

Business trip, day trip or holiday? Transport connections are ideal.

Ulm is an attractive city in Germany not least because of its convenient location: Ulm is in the midst of well-developed rail network and highways. Memmingen Airport is approximately 25 minutes away, Stuttgart Airport some 50 minutes and from Munich International Airport it takes one and a half hours to get to Ulm.

Moreover, the major highways A7 and A8 cross at Ulm.

So not only Italy, Austria and Switzerland but also the metropolises and holiday areas worldwide are within easy reach.

Ulm can also serve as a starting point for day trips to the surrounding area. Particularly attractive destinations are the Blautopf in Blaubeuren, the abbeys at Wiblingen or Roggenburg, the Lonetal (Lone Valley) and the Kleine Lautertal (Small Lauter Valley). There is also the opportunity to visit the Legoland theme park in Günzburg and the Ravensburger Spieleland which are popular attractions for children.

There is something for everyone to enjoy.

Ulm offers a full range of arts and cultural opportunities: the Ulm Minster, the Museum of Bread Art, the Weishaupt Art Gallery, the Fishermen’s Quarter, the Art Path and the Botanical Garden, just to name a few.

There are sports clubs and gyms providing lots of opportunities for those who want to improve their fitness. Such opportunities are even offered at Wieland.

The University City Ulm has many cafés and restaurants and for night owls it offers numerous clubs, bars and discos.

Every year in July, a traditional one-week festival takes place in Ulm. Its highlight is the ‘Schwörmontag’ (Oath Monday), which is generally on the third Monday of the month. It is a very popular event, not only for those who live in Ulm but also for visitors from far and wide.

On that Monday, usually at 11 am, Ulm’s mayor swears a traditional oath which goes back to 1397. Nowadays the whole event is more a symbolic act during which the mayor looks back on the past year and tells the people of Ulm about political, economical and cultural plans for the next year.

In the afternoon, usually around 3 pm, the traditional 'Nabada' takes place. It can probably best be described as some kind of carnival on the river Danube. There are countless colourful boats on the river. Many people choose a particular theme for their boats, so many of the boats are decorated lavishly or come in unusual shapes. But there are crowds of people without boats – not only those who watch from a safe distance in order not to get wet, but others that enjoy themselves swimming and partying in the river.

In winter, the traditional Christmas market on the ‘Münsterplatz’ (Cathedral Square) attracts many visitors with its Christmas atmosphere.
